Life on the High Seas
My nephew recently graduated from high school. The other day we were talking about his future and he told me that he wanted to work on a boat. I told him about my various experiences of life on the high seas, but that I sail mainly for recreational purposes, and that I actually didn’t know all that much about how one would go about trying to make a living at sea.
So the other day I took him with me to the marina and started teaching him the ropes. I explained the importance of safety and taught him how to use my various locator beacons. He was really intrigued by it all, and after he felt comfortable we took the boat out onto the water. I told him that after learning with me, if he still wanted to try, that I would inquire with as many people as I knew if they needed a deckhand.
Hearing that thrilled him to no end, and I was impressed with how hard he worked on the boat. He seemed to comprehend the inherent dangers with everything, and picked it all up rather quickly. He even understood immediately how important having a spare batteryMinder charger on board was, in case the other wore out. He really is a smart kid.
